Finally, when the twins were seven months old, the consultant told us she thought she had the answer.

After dozens of tests had ruled out everything else, there seemed only one possibility. Darren and I listened, stunned, as she explained what had happened. She said that, after conceiving, my body had for some reason released another egg weeks later, meaning I'd actually conceived twice. It was called superfetation - a condition more common in animals but almost unheard-of in humans.

There are just a handful of known cases. She said Macey had conceived second, about five weeks after Finley.

So while Finley was born at 37 weeks, Macey was at just 32 weeks when she entered the world.
